This video resonates with me on so many levels. When I speak at middle and high schools across the country, I always pose this question to the youth:
If Walmart, Krogers, or local supermarkets were to permanently close in your community, how would you feed yourself? The answers vary from eating bugs, pets, cannibalism and even burglary!
The answers usually generate laughter until I explain that analysts expect urban areas to self-destruct within two weeks. I explain that we are the only species (excluding domisticated pets, zoos, etc.) that depend on others to feed us. The kids learn that the farmer becomes the king in this scenerio. The kids learns that their ancestors depended on the soil to feed them for many centuries.
Gardening and growing food can be extremely theraputic and the first step in becoming self-sufficient.
